Explaining

HORSES' GENDER

Several terms are used worldwide to describe a horse’s gender.
Explore our guide and learn how gender can influence management, training, and breeding — whether you’re working with P.R.E., C.D.E., or Lusitano horses.

MARE
A mare is a female horse over the age of three.
Mares are often admired for their intelligence, focus, and maternal instincts. In both P.R.E. and C.D.E. breeding programs, top-quality mares play a crucial role in preserving bloodlines and improving athletic potential.
STALLION
A stallion is an adult male horse that has not been castrated — meaning he retains full reproductive ability and typical masculine traits.
Stallions are known for their power, charisma, and presence, making them highly valued for both breeding and competition.
In P.R.E. and Lusitano breeds, stallions are often selected for their conformation, movement, and temperament before entering stud.
GELDING
A gelding is a castrated male horse, unable to reproduce.
Because of their lower hormone levels, geldings are typically calmer, more consistent, and easier to handle — especially in training or sport environments.
They are often preferred for C.D.E. competition horses or riders seeking focus and stability.

Does Gender Matter?

Find out how and when! Click below to get the answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Does gender affect a horse performance?
Not significantly.
Research shows that mares, stallions, and geldings perform equally well in sport — though each may show slightly different behavior or manageability.
Can all P.R.E., C.D.E., and Lusitano horses breed?
Only approved mares and stallions with excellent conformation and functional scores are allowed to breed according to the official studbook regulations.
What if I buy a stallion and decide to geld him?
Yes — many owners choose to geld a young stallion if they prioritize rideability and ease of management over breeding potential.
Then why does gender matter?
It matters for your goals: breeding → choose approved mare/stallion; sport & pleasure → geldings or calm mares are often preferred; tradition & prestige → many collectors prefer stallions.
